I was once asked to write something about myself to provide material for an awards banquet. It took time and exaggeration, and proved frustratingly difficult to write. After about a day of agonizing, this is what I came up with.
I was raised on my family's ranch in a small rural community in far Northern California called Little Shasta where I attended a one-room school with a total of 16 students from 1st through 6th grade. After a brief and occasionally memorable stint at Montague Elementary, I attended Yreka High School and played baseball, basketball and football, graduating with the "English Student of the Year" and "Math Nerd of the Year" awards in 1998. After a summer of hay hauling on the family ranch, I followed my girlfriend and brother to Chico to experience College.
Two experiences present themselves as the most memorable in my Chico State career. My freshman year was filled with some of the most educational and exciting experiences of my life in the General Studies Thematic program. Never had I experienced something so great or learned so much about the world in all my life. My junior year I had the opportunity to participate in the college of HFA's London Semester. The experience gave me the opportunity to learn a great deal about England, culture, and myself.
Overall, my studies and experience at Chico State have helped me to develop a keen interest in the future of communication technologies and their usable applications for everyday people. My emphasis is on the development of web-based communication technologies in particular.
When I'm not staring at a computer screen, I sporadically read books that catch my fancy and find myself dreaming of someday writing something both outrageously funny and deeply profound (on the order of "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" by Dave Eggers or "Me Talk Pretty One Day" by David Sedaris) or insightfully poetic and universally meaningful (on the order of "The Romantics" by Pankaj Mishra or "Plainsong" by Kent Haruf) or something combining the best and worst of each to form my own style. I also enjoy making small compositions on the piano that seek to imitate the styles of George Winston, Ludovico Einaudi, and/or Jim Brickman.
My future plans include some sort of employment as a web developer where I can express myself both creatively and intellectually, another trip overseas to see more of the world, a more comprehensive knowledge of understanding and speaking Spanish, continued travels and adventures with the love of my life (Tina Faris), and the general sorting out of the nebulous cloud that I suspect most people encounter when trying to map out their future.
Throughout my life I have learned how to learn, laugh, love and live and for these lessons I am forever indebted to all the individuals who have influenced and taught me over the years. In particular, my life and endeavors wouldn't be the same without the love and constant support of my wonderful girlfriend of six years (Tina Faris), my parents (Roy and Joan), my brother (Logan), my grandparents (Blair and Pat), the Jessee family (Jim, Nelda, Earl & Emma), and the Ford Family Foundation of Roseburg, Oregon.
